Tutorial (slides.com)

Tutorial (https://slides.com/)

Slides is a place for creating, presenting and sharing slide decks.
This tutorial will explain how we can use this tool

1.    First, we enter to https://slides.com/. We will find the options Sign up now and Learn more (picture a). If we press Learn more we will find an explanation of what Slides can do (picture b).

2. If we press Sign up, we can choose to use it for free (Public) or for different prizes (Lite, Pro and Team).

3. Once we have chosen, we will be able to log in with an email account or with Facebook or Google.

4. After selecting, we will find two options: Create a deck and Tell me more

If we press Tell me more, we will find some help in order to use the tool. (picture a)

If we press Create a deck, we will be able to start working on our presentation (picture b).

5. We will find different options in order to create our presentation:

This option will allow us to edit the alignment, scale, line height, letter spacing, text colour, background colour, opacity, padding, rotation, border, animation, depth and actions (Edit html, duplicate and delete).

You can insert a video from YouTube or Vimeo into your presentation using "Iframe" content type in the Slides editor. You will have to copy the iframe embed code from YouTube/Vimeo. It can be found in their respective "share" options.

We will be able to search for images to add to the presentation. We can press “Upload” in order to find an image from our computer or we can insert from an URL. Once we have selected it, we can modify its opacity, rotation, border, link, animation, depth and actions (maximize, duplicate or delete).

We can insert tables. We will be able to modify rows and columns, cell paddings, border colour, text alignment, text scale, text colour, background colour, opacity, rotation, animation, depth and actions (duplicate and delete).

This option will allow us to search for videos to insert in the presentation. Again, we ca choose to search in our computer or to insert from URL.

The Slides editor provides an easy way to display syntax highlighted code inside of your presentations. Code that you paste or type will be highlighted in real-time based on the selected language and theme.
We will be able to change language, theme, text scale, opacity, padding, rotation, border, animation, depth, and actions (
maximize, duplicate or delete)

Example

We can add a shape to our presentation. We will be able to modify its opacity, colour, rotation, border link, animation, depth and actions (maximize, duplicate or delete).

We can insert lines and change the beginning and the end of them and modify their style, thickness, colour, opacity. We can tick link, animation, depth and we have actions like duplicate and delete.

The Slides editor allows you to easily display mathematical formulas in your presentations. It's also possible to include math inline as part of a text block. To do this, you'll need to wrap your formula with one of the following delimiters:
- \( inline math here \)
- \[ display math here \]
- $$ display math here $$

The \( \) wrapper renders your math inline with no line break, while \[ \] and $$ $$ both show math in "display" mode on its own line.

With this, we will be able to add more slides to our presentation

With this one, we will be able to modify the structure of the slide (we can add images or add a subtitle). Furthermore, we can view saved slides and we can browse slides:

Add a collaborator

6. If we enter again, we will find our profile and the decks we have created:

If we click on the presentation, we will see it and we have the option to see it full screen, to see the comments, to make a copy, to share, to edit and to open the present view (Picture a and b).

About slides.com

slides.com is a combination of Power Point and Prezi. It is user-friendly as Power Point and also dynamic as Prezi.  Slides enables anyone with a web browser to easily create, present and share beautiful presentations for free. The company was founded by Hakim El Hattab and Owen Bossola in 2013. They operate out of New York City and Stockholm, Sweden.
Within the main advantages we find that it's free (unless you want to purchase a subscription), it's private (you can decide to publish it and make it public), you can see it everywhere, you can add collaborators, you can work when you are offline, you can edit from any device, you can assign tasks by tagging people in comments and you can add flowcharts and diagrams.

Pros of using slides.com in the classroom:

We can use it as an alternative to Power Point
We can strengthen our students' oracy skills
It can be a way of motivating students for example if we ask them to present a topic which they like
It is a way to avoid the typical possition of the teacher as a lecturer; it can be more interactive to use a presentation and encourage participation

Cons of using slides.com in the classroom:

Creating a presentation may be time-consuming
Visual learners would be engaged but another type of learners won't find it useful
Teacher needs to train students on how to use the tool which is not easy and time-consuming
