Lesson (Glogster)

Lesson 1 (Glogster)

  • Age group: 14-15 year-old
  • Language level: Upper Intermediate level
  • Objective: to make a poster on healthy food
  • Communicative goal: identifying groups of food
  •  Language areas: Speaking, Writing
  • Type of school: Private school
  • Duration: one hour and a half
  • Physical location: school facilities
  • Topic: Healthy food

Warmer
Students will be asked to brainstorm in the classroom about food and its different categories (grains, proteins, vegetables, fruits, dairy and oils). They will go to the front in order to categorize food in the different groups.

Web
After brainstorming about the topic, students will be shown this webpage on the computer lab: https://www.choosemyplate.gov/ and they will have to create a mind map with each group of food and include examples
After exploring the webpage, students will be shown a tutorial on Glogster and they will be explained how to use it in order to use it in the next step. Tutorial: https://florenciaictple.blogspot.com/2018/10/tutorial-glogster.html

They will have to discuss the following questions in pairs in order to accomplish the following step:

- What information did you find useful for your daily life?
- Have you learnt something new?
- What information do you think will be relevant to create a presentation about this topic?

What next
Students will be asked to create a poster on healthy food using Glogster. They will have to provide information about the different groups of food. Then, they will have to present it in front of the class.

Evaluation criteria:

- Was the presentation fluent?
- Did the presentation provide enough information about the topic?

- Was the presentation accurate in terms of grammar?

Theoretical framework

SAMR Model
The SAMR Model was created by Ruben Puentedura. SAMR stands for Substitution Augmentation Modification Redefinition. This method offers a way of seeing how computer technology might impact teaching and learning. The important concept is the level of the students' engagement.
In this case, all of the stages are present. Substitution takes place since the same information could have been printed and offered to the students. Augmentation is present since technology offers an effective tool to perform tasks. Since feedback is immediate, students may feel more engaged in learning.
Modification is also present since common classroom tasks are accomplished by the use of technology. This aspect is also present since they work in the computer classroom where the teacher gives feedback and help the students when they ask questions.
We also find Redefinition since technology allows new tasks that were impossible to achieve before. Technology allows collaboration.

PLANIED
Planied (Plan Nacional Integral de Educación Digital) is a Digital Competence Framework implemented by the Ministry of Education in 2015. Its aim is to promote digital literacy in every school and, for such purpose, it proposes six dimensions needed for a person to be considered digitally competent.

- Creativity and innovation
- Communication and collaboration
- Information and representation
- Responsible and solidary participation
- Critical Thinking
- Autonomous use of ICTs

Throughout this lesson the different dimensions are tackled. For instance, creativity and innovation will be key to the what next section of the lesson. The students will be creating a poster. Then, communication an collaboration is achieved by the discussion between students about the questions that the teacher suggested. Information and representation is present while investigating about the topic and then creating a poster of the material they gathered. Critical thinking will be at work while discussing about the topic and then when writing what they have learnt. On the last stage, they will be dealing with the autonomous use of technology since they are creating their own product.
